We See Our Final Cut Pro Systems as . . . “Engines?”

We here at Video Labs recently acquired another Final Cut Pro HD (FCP) system. Are we turning into something other than our reputation as a reliable media disseminator?

No, not really. Although, sure, some clients ask us to shoot and edit their video projects, we have not strayed too far from our “media replication” roots.

We just are further living up to our an additonal part of our mission: provide media replication and related multimedia services.”

Now, we won’t enter the dangerous waters of trying to defend Final Cut Pro over AVID. We serve clients who have both systems.

But we do llike the ease, robustness and versatility that Final Cut Pro offers in allowing us to ingest, manipulate, and export media. So, given that, we look at the systems as "engines." Here are a couple of examples:

Where clients used to give us dBeta or BetacamSP masters, they are increasingly providing a hard drive with either a ProResHQ or other form of QuickTime file of a sequence on a hard drive.

From there, as mentioned in last month’s eNewsletter, a lot of clients are asking us to make H.264 files and assorted other compressions for web-posting, like Flash or compressed QT. We do that a lot for our PSA-producing clients.

And our FCP systems often get involved earlier in the process as well.

Many of our independent producer clients have their own Final Cut Pro systems (which they chose over AVID because of price as well as other reasons). But the price points are also such that while they can afford the editing system, they often don’t have the equipment nor the time to input the footage into their system.

For example, we have fulfilled many requests from clients to digitize either HDCAM or DVCproHD field tapes into our FCP as ProResHQ files and transfer those to their hard drive from which they can edit on their own FCP system.

And then when they are finished with the editing, those same clients often send us a ProResHQ of their edited sequence and have us output to HDCAM and perhaps add captions.

And it doesn’t stop there . . .

As we further follow that phrase, “. . . and related multimedia services,” another popular service of ours is making authored (aka “navigable” DVDs). So, from the above ProResHQ sequence, we have a variety of ways of creating the necessary anamorphic widescreen SD MPEG2 and AC-3 audio files . . . but again, our Final Cut Pro systems are almost always the starting point.

So yeah, while we have the talented team to edit projects for you, hopefully you can see how we at Video Labs also love to call our Final Cut Pro systems, our “engines.”

CMYK and RGB Explained . . . (for the rest of us)

OK, if you are a graphic designer, you can probably skip this article, but if you are like many in the media field, you remain a bit glassy-eyed when you hear the terms CMYK or RGB used in describing the artwork of your projects.

For example, there are times when we here at Video Labs ask for your disc face or packaging artwork to be presented to us in RGB, and then there are times when we ask for it in CMYK.

What gives?

Well, here’s a brief starting primer:

CMYK = the complementary colors of Cyan, Magenta, Yellow plus the fourth color of Black. This is known as a “subtractive” color process, meaning that if you combine equal amounts of the three colors of Cyan, Magenta and Yellow, you will produce black. Some processes just stop there, but the addition of a fourth color, Black (K = Black) provides two advantages: 1) save having to use all three inks just to make black, and 2) this sole black ink can actually be a richer black than can be made from the mixture of the three other colors.

General rule #1: Printing processes utilize CMY or CMYK. (Hold that thought . . .)

RGB = the primary colors of Red, Green and Blue. This process is known as “additive,” because if you mix the three colors in equal amounts, you get white.

“Wait a minute,” you say. “If I mix red, green and blue ink together on a paper, it certainly is not going to come out white.”

This is true, but if you did it with colored lights, the results would produce a white lit object. And how about those red, green and blue pixels in your television or computer monitor? If all three are charged at the same time, the perceived result is white not black.

So general rule #2: RGB applies to lighting and digital displays of color.

But yes, here’s where it can get confusing. You rightly might ask, “Well then, I know that there are some RGB printers on the market. What’s that all about?” What’s going on there, is that for technical and economic reasons, those printers intake RGB artwork and then convert it to CMY or CMYK for the actual printing.

Whew, ok, that’s enough for now.

Let’s end this with the following summary rules:
• For disc face artwork on replicated CD/DVD projects, where we use offset or silk-screen printing, we will ask for CMYK artwork.
• For offset printing of packaging (like DVD wraps, etc.) we will also ask for CMYK artwork.
• For duplicated DVDs, where we use thermal transfer printing for disc faces, we will ask for RGB artwork, again, as stated above, even though it will be converted to CMY in printing. (As stated above, this printing process does not have a separate “K,” or black).
• And for digital printing of packaging (like DVD wraps, etc.) we will ask for RGB artwork. Again, the digital printer will convert it to CMYK.

Next time, we’ll touch on another term we often use with our clients, Pantone Matching System (PMS) colors, aka “spot” colors and the role that plays in printing.

Meet another new face at Video Labs

Tommy D’Aquino is another new member to our Video Labs’ multimedia team. He came on board last fall.
In addition to his expertise with Final Cut Pro, Tommy brings to the table a wealth of experience with After Effects, Flash, animation and web-based training.

Plus Tommy just happens to be an easy-going guy with a great “can do” attitude. That’s always nice to have around here amidst our many “rush orders.”

Before joining Video Labs, Tommy worked in both frontline multimedia and management positions during an 11-year tenure with Fortune 500 company SAIC.

He received his BA in Film / Video production from UMBC, and then Tommy went to Hollywood where he sharpened his multimedia chops working on projects for a variety of clients, ranging from Warner Bros. to Playboy.

Tommy then returned east where he became an in-demand multimedia instructor both at professional workshops and within academia.

Perhaps Tommy’s equanimity comes from his large family (his wife and five children). Or maybe he just gets his “yah-yahs” out with his passion for music. He plays the drums and a bit of guitar and enjoys playing along with Foo-Fighters and Chevelle, as well as just jamming with his older brother and children – all of which are quite musically inclined.

So, regardless of the complexity of your multimedia project, we know that you will enjoy working with Tommy just as much as we are glad to have him here.

A New Face at Video Labs Multimedia

We have a several new team members here at Video Labs, and over the next few months, we’ll introduce them to you.

Enrique Huaiquil (Ha-why-keel) has been with our Multimedia team for about 8 months now.

Originally from Santiago, Chile, with roots to the proud Mapuche culture, Enrique moved to the US with his family when his father took a diplomatic post in Washington, DC.

After developing a passion for photography and videography at a young age, Enrique went on to earn a BA in Film/Video and Media Productions from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

He expresses a unique sensibility in his visual art, which is evident at his personal website.

Enrique’s other passion is soccer. He plays for two teams and recently traveled to LA one weekend to watch the Chilean national team play the US. (How diplomatic . . . the game was a tie.)

While also being a versatile video editor, Enrique has developed into our leading in-house aficionado with our high-end DVD authoring platform, Sonic Scenarist.

And we have been calling upon his advanced videography skills on several projects of late.

While Enrique is bilingual with English and Spanish, you can also be sure he will speak your language when it comes to delivering high quality multimedia projects.

We are on the H.264 bandwagon!

Video Labs is on the H.264 Bandwagon. Are you?

While the list of media deliverables from our clients becomes ever more diverse, it is apparent that an H.264 file is becoming as common of a request as is a dBeta or HDCAM dub.

First, understand that H.264 is a codec. A codec is short for “compression/decompression.” The main purpose of a codec is to reduce the size of a media file to make it manageable while at the same time maintaining as much quality of the original file as possible.

As an analogy, think of how a .pdf of a Word doc maintains the quality (and other advantages) while doing so at a much smaller file size.

An H.264 is acknowledged as one of the best codecs at doing that for video.

The name H.264 is actually a combination of identification protocol structures from two international technical organizations. One uses letters and another using numbers, hence H.264 If you want to drill down further into that, click here.

As a side note, H.264 can also be referred to as AVC or “Advanced Video Codec.” You might also see it referred to as a mpeg4 file. The mpeg4 part of this can get confusing, but suffice it to say that you’ll run across H.264 files that have either .mov or .mp4 in the extension.

The properties of the format allow for versatile use, from mobile phone video . . . to being “the first advanced codec to be accepted into the Blu-ray format.” (from the book, “Blu-ray Disc Demystified”)

And its that versatility that has made H.264 so popular.

But all is not perfect.

While H.264 is a great delivery codec, Final Cut Pro and AVID both have to decompress such files and convert them into a file format acceptable to them. For example, for Final Cut, a popular conversion is to Apple ProRes files. Such conversion adds a step, which means time, and time means $$.

That’s why if you are just sending us a sequence from your Final Cut project to import into ours, we may ask you to export it as a ProRes file on to a hard drive rather than give us an H.264 file.

But our research indicates that newer versions of the editing programs coming to market will be able to accept H.264 as a native codec.

Regardless, our present experience here at Video Labs shows that our clients feel that the advantages of H.264 as a delivery format far outweigh any possible disadvantages.

And to that we say, "Keep ‘em coming!"

The Japanese Disaster & the Effects on Media Supplies

The March 11 earthquake and tsunami that wreaked death and destruction in Japan, and created a grave nuclear threat situation that is still in flux, has also had a huge effect on the world economy.

And the Communications field has been no exception.

When life and death and environmental catastrophe are threatening, it seems a bit trivial to discuss such things as media supply, but we at Video Labs are in the business of media replication, and we feel it our responsibility to keep our clients informed on any impact the disaster in Japan may have on their businesses.

The Sony manufacturing facility in Sendai, which is about 80 miles from the earthquake’s epicenter, suffered severe damage and ceased operations.

As a result, the following tape formats have been particularly challenging to obtain: HDCAM (both rstandard and SR), XDCAM, IMX and DVcam. Also affected is Blu-ray disc stock.

And there’s been a domino effect as well. When producers can’t obtain a particular format, they then move toward trying to find either “used" (aka "evaluated” stock) of that format or start considering alternative formats. The result is that the demand for both has soared as well.

This whole paradigm gets further roiled by the trend of media replicators like Video Labs enacting “just in time” inventory policies as way to be more efficient in the current recession.

And as with the oil economy, when scarcity, demand and panic are all in play at the same time, prices go up. So, given the rapidly changing nature of the situation, we ask that you understand that there may need to be some price flexibility between once a job is quoted and once it is started.

Be assured, we are being diligent in our efforts to help our clients meet their media needs. To assist us, we ask that you give us as much notice as possible regarding any media replication orders you have in the pipeline.

The latest we have heard is that the Sendai plant will start production of Blu-ray discs in late May and tape stock in July.

QR Not ER

If ER stands for emergency room, what does that have to do with QR? And what is QR? I'm glad you asked. QR, or quick response, as reported in Wikipedia, is a specific matrix barcode (or two-dimensional code), readable by dedicated QR barcode readers and camera phones. The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on a white background. Information encoded can be text, URL or other data.

QR codes storing addresses and URLs may appear on magazines, signs, buses, business cards, or on just about any object which users might need information. Users with a camera phone containing the correct reader application can scan an image of some QR Code to display text, contact information, connect to a wireless network, or open a web page in the phone's browser.

What does this all have to do with media services? Another good question from the peanut gallery. Think about this...................your looking for as much exposure as possible for a beautifully produced PSA. Sure, SpoTTrac encoding will enable Nielsen to track airplay. However, if more than just TV viewers were able to learn about your PSA, wouldn't you cherish the extra attention? Of course you would. Adding a QR code to PSA materials will grab the extra viewership you're seeking.

Founded in 1987 as the AVDA (American Video Duplication Association), AIMMA is a senior executive-level organization of independent media manufacturing and service company owners and operators. All members manufacture media or provide related services, and the association is inclusive of replicators, duplicators, packaging companies, printers, fulfillment houses, production/postproduction companies and authoring facilities. Membership is open to all North American media management companies regardless of size or medium manufactured/provided.

Two new board members were elected, two appointed, and officers named. New board members, Jad Porter of Design Video Communications (DVC), Ram Nomula of MAM-A and Chris Elmore of International Media Services (IMS), will join serving members Michael Weiss of Video Labs, Dan Redd of Replicopy, Jerry Koerner of Video Services Group (VSG), Max Wyler of Accord Productions and Mary Reeves of Spinergy.

With the creativity of designers, technical resources of a print shop, and our reknowned customer service, Robert Long II along with Randall Thomas are at the heart of a growing graphic design department where your projects come together. With the recent addition of a state-of-the-art iMac, several high-end digital color printers and other upgrades, our graphics department offers full-service solutions --from creative concept to printing to media packaging.

Robert Long II joined Video Labs four years ago. A native of Davenport, IA, Robert has brought over thirty years of experience in professional illustration and design into our mix. Also a skilled cartoonist, we've enjoyed Rob's drawings on the pages of this newsletter. His creative evolution includes work as an actor, filmmaker and rock musician, all of which have added to his skill set as a professional graphic designer.

Department supervisor Randall Thomas began working in our broadcast services group 14 years ago, but he found his true calling in the graphic design department as our jack-of-all-trades. Blu-ray Disc - It's Not Just For Hollywood

Here at Video Labs, the warm weather has blossomed into a deluge of Blu-ray projects. What accounts for the upswing? While it's difficult to pinpoint any one category, there are some trends on the rise in the DC market. Our customers have brought us a variety of interesting and challenging projects - everything from data archiving to full length features.

Film Festivals
Film festival season is upon us and, for some local filmmakers, Blu-ray Disc offers some great advantages for gaining entry into the most prestigious festivals. Jeff Colburn of Patriot Film Studios told us that, "With the advancement of High Definition cameras, technology is now affordable for the independent filmmaker to shoot at 1080p or greater. With our film, we utilized the RED camera and shot at 4K. Some film festivals allow you to submit Blu-ray, but most still only allow DVD screeners. Hopefully, more festivals will accept Blu-ray submissions in the near future as it's almost a disservice to show your film (even) at 720p. So much is lost." We worked with Jeff on mastering Devil's Racecourse in both DVD and Blu-ray. He also commented, "Once selected, many festivals support HDCam for actual screenings as well."

Marketing and Promotion
Marketing groups for our local broadcasters have recently added Blu-ray Discs to their outreach efforts, especially when targeting TV critics for their premiere shows. We're also seeing requests for use at trade shows, museum kiosks and conferences where widescreen monitors are now the norm. But, even with a small duplication order, Video Labs stocks a variety of packaging and printing options including Blu-ray branded cases and our high quality color thermal printing. To expedite orders, we have increased our capacity for this format.

Professional Demos and Proposals
If you're working on your next career milestone, we're prepared to help. How better to showcase your skill set if you're working in HD? Consider that decision makers may be viewing your work on a 46" LCD screen. Recently, we created a Blu-ray master that was included with a bid proposal - the advanced Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound really highlighted this contractor's talent in audio engineering and sound design.

Archiving and Records Management
Blu-ray is also a terrific storage medium. Unlike portable hard drives which may become damaged or broken, BD works like any data disc, allowing for a secure burn to archive assets and files. Those in the document management field might find them to be a cost-effective, secure storage format. Video Labs stocks 25GB discs and provides image scanning and archiving services for affordable rates.

Stay tuned for more about the unique features of the Blu-ray as it evolves. Just this week, the Blu-ray Disc Association announced the release of the BD-XL, a rewritable disc with capacity of 100GB and a new hybrid format called the IH-BD.

Some leading indicators . . .
What accounts for the uptick? While we can't point to any one reason, here are some converging trends.

> Consumer demand and awareness is on the rise - the unrivaled viewing experience of HD has brought more viewers to the exciting format. The Digital Entertainment Group announced this week that 1st Quarter sales of Blu-ray Discs increased by 74% compared to the same period in 2009.

> Revenue from Blu-ray has been consistently on the rise this year. Consumers have started to explore some the advanced features of BD-Live and Internet Connectivity.
> Cost-efficient authoring solutions like Adobe Encore CS4 have made it easier to handle the production workflow, reducing the cost of mastering. At the same time, the cost of raw materials has been reduced. Video Labs' authoring specialists have found Encore to be an efficient tool for most projects to date. Using it we can easily provide pop-up and motions menus.
> Retail prices for Blu-ray players have fallen - it's not uncommon to find a quality player at a price point of $150.00 - 200.00. This also increases viewership.

Wrappers and Codec's Revealed

Feel like you don't know an .mpg2 from a MP4? Confused? You're not alone.

What the heck is a Codec?
Not long ago, terms such as codec meant little outside of an edit suite
but with a rapidly changing industry, even those trying to download the latest Hollywood blockbuster might need a basic understanding of relevant video terms. Basically, 'codec' is geek speak for "Compressor/Decompressor," which relates to technology that makes video and audio files small enough to travel over the internet or fit into specified parameters. MPEG-2, for example, is the standard codec used for authoring DVDs. The latest, greatest codec on the horizon is known as H.264 (or MPEG-4, Part 10). Developed by Apple, this codec has some amazing advances in compression technology and scalability, making it a fast riser in the industry. It's a 'behind the scenes' file that's incorporated into many new, high-quality video products for use in Blu-ray, iPod, Playstation3 and X-Box 360 players.

About Compression
For compression, we use a wide variety of software at Video Labs
like Apple's Compressor, Adobe Suite, Sorenson, and QuickTime Pro. In the compression process, these tools apply complex algorithmic equations to determine which pixels to keep and which to throw out while still maintaining picture quality. Making the right choices in software settings (frame & bit rate, field settings, etc.) ultimately affects how the video will look once it is decompressed in your player.

What's up with Wrappers and Containers?
Wrappers, also called containers, are the structure that holds everything together in one neat file like, well, a container or wrapper. Commonly, they are referred to by the extension - .avi, .flv, .wmv to name a few. Within the container, you'll find video, audio, color space files & other metadata, all of which function together.

So, it gets a little confusing sometimes . . . that's ok, right?
Here's what makes these terms confusing -- in some instances, containers and codec's have the same or similar names and you can only tell by context what is being referred to. QuickTime, for example, can be referred to as a media file, but it's actually an entire system for digital media - .mov is the container format that holds it all together. To make it more complex, QuickTime can also be used within other container formats including mp4 for iPod.

With this legislation, the government ruled that all televisions 13" or larger be equipped with devices that capture and decode the closed captioning on Line 21 of the broadcast video signal (www.videolabs.net/multimedia/captioning.htm) and this is still the industry standard for broadcast media.

For web video, it's a whole new ballgame. Government agencies must be compliant for Section 508 for all video posted on the web, but this can get a little tricky. When planning your project, it's best to find out in advance what format best suits the needs and standards of the web site administrator.

Compression Session
Unfortunately, when you digitize and then compress from video tape with captions, the caption signal is not consistently recognized by software used for viewing (like Windows Media Player, for example). So, specific data files are used depending on multimedia programming software being utilized. Someone using Flash to create a website may need a file called .xml in pop-on style, while Windows Media video files can be closed captioned using a data file called .smi. Some prefer English subtitles or open captions that cannot be 'turned off,' ensuring ease of use. For high quality videos with a frame size of 720 x 486, it's possible to preserve standard captions from Line 21 in a Quicktime or Windows Media files for posting on some websites.

For Low Vision and Vision Impaired - Let's "Hear" it for Alternate Audio
We're receiving more requests than ever about Alternate Audio for web site videos - it's a sign of the times. But, how do vision impaired users navigate a computer-based environment where a mouse click is so necessary? Computers are outfitted with specialized screen reader software and refreshable Braille displayers so that the users can find their way. For web programmers, it means allowing for keyboard short cuts for a Braille keyboard user. Alternate audio embedded in the website can help a vision impaired user to navigate through a web site by sound. For more on this subject, Utah State University has provided an excellent website to support and explain these technical standards (www.webaim.org) for compliancy.

For video, Video Labs provides 'media description' services (aka - "alt-audio" or "audio description") so that actions on screen are included as an additional track of audio. For disc media like DVDs or CDs where a menu is used for navigation, our authoring specialists can include extra audio files that, when engaged, instruct the user on how to access the content. Alternatively, a "Read Me" file can be included so that screen reader software installed on a computer can explain needed information. What is Your Color Space? RGB vs. CMYK
One of the leading causes of production delays is working through problems with digital artwork files. By setting up your artwork in the right color space, you will achieve the quality that you're looking for while saving time and hassle. Chroma key work is a function of the RGB Color Space

What is RGB Color?
Computer and TV monitors emit light in a color spectrum known as RGB color (short for Red/Green/Blue) named for the primary colors of light. Video cameras, scanners and digital photographers all capture images using this color spectrum - and computer monitors use the same. RGB color space allows for special effects techniques like chroma key compositing or "green-screening" (see this month's cartoon) where one image is layered over another by manipulating aspects of color and light - so, an actor in front of a green screen can be superimposed on a different background for visual effect.

"But why don't they match?" -- The CMYK Color Space
We're often asked this question -- why doesn't my printed wrapper match what I see on my monitor? It's simple - inked paper absorbs or reflects light, rather than emitting light, so the range of colors is not the same. Thus, when you see color on your computer monitor (RGB) and a then see a printed version, a variation is seen.

Graphic design for offset printing uses a color scheme known as CMYK (Cyan/Magenta/Yellow/Black "Key") or PMS so color matching between these two environments is often needed. In printing inks on paper, transparent pigments are used to filter out the RGB wavelengths in proper combinations to create the desired color. These filters are known as CMYK or four-color process printing.

Tips and Suggestions
Because offset printing, silkscreen printing and most digital color processes use CMYK as a reference, digital artwork that is created in RGB (like still images, screen captures, or digital photos) should first be converted to CMYK prior to printing. Color-matching, when needed, is much easier when working in CMYK color space.

For short run projects, our high-quality thermal disc printers use RGB color. Submit your artwork as a .bmp image with a resolution of 300 dpi.

Submit matching artwork for packaging elements in CMYK color with text and lines as vector graphics.

Offset printing (four color process) calls for CMYK with Pantone for spot color. This type of printing is best if photo images have a lot of detail and the colors are soft in tone. The end result is a smooth finish on the disc face.

Silkscreen printing is an excellent choice for solid and vibrant colors, but the end product is textured and photo images can sometimes have a coarse appearance. However, it is much easier to match colors between the disc face and packaging elements using silkscreen printing.

Eco-friendly media? Go Green? Sustainable packaging?

Are these ‘buzz words’ a momentary or a solid trend in the industry? Only time, demand and innovation will tell. But, Video Labs is keeping an eye on the best of what’s around.

The high profile release of Al Gore’s documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, created quite a stir – its award-winning eco-friendly package set a new precedent for creative design -- it was the first DVD released with packaging that was 100% post-consumer recycled fiber. As public awareness has peaked, many manufacturers who serve the entertainment and retail sectors have been compelled to overhaul and publish their environmental policies and standards. To ensure that Green guidelines are met, some sectors have formed Green Alliances to create and monitor standards and provide certification.

How to balance durability, quality and cost versus green-friendliness? There’s the rub.

Paper or Plastic?

One way to choose your media packaging is to consider an all-paper or paperboard solution. Since many areas of the country now offer convenient methods of mixed paper recycling, this is a great choice for many projects. In particular, if your project is for one-time viewing or use – a give-away advertising piece, a downloadable file or a dated video, consider our high-quality paper packaging.

Where is it headed?

There are no simple solutions – green-friendly packaging can sometimes be cost-prohibitive, depending on the quantity. Many will only make the change when the green solution is not only comparable in quality but also in price. Still, we think that those with innovative ideas will be uniquely positioned to succeed, especially if federal legislators get involved to monitor standards in the coming years. We’ve seen some really cool designs coming our way from Europe where there has been some significant investment into green adaptive technology. Also, there’s mention of great ideas about how to reduce waste by recycling disc media and other materials. As consumers are encouraged to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, we think demand will increase and keep us all searching for just the right package.

Permanent Solutions

What about durability though? Media packaging is not just a ‘throw away’ item but is designed for protecting discs and for long-term storage so choosing a package that is durable is also key.

So, the plastics manufacturers have also responded to the trend and are making better use of materials for the long term. There’s a good argument to be made that plastic is actually more eco-friendly than paper -- you don’t have to cut down valuable trees and can be used multiple times.

Choosing cases that use less plastic is a great option. One of our clients pairs a slim full DVD case made with recyclable plastic with a four-color wrap printed on FSC certified paper with soy-based ink. These are available for short runs as well as full scale replication projects. There are also Digipaks incorporating paperboard with a disc tray made from recycled soda bottles for custom replication orders, but we routinely stock full cases made from recycled plastic that can also be put in your recycling bin instead of the trash.
